ABOUT ABOUT

The World Health Student Organization (WHSO) at Wayne State University School of Medicine is comprised of medical students whose mission is to improve global health while gaining rich medical and cultural experiences both in the local community of Detroit and abroad. It is our organization’s goal to provide the highest standard of medical care at no cost to underserved populations around the world. WHSO sends teams comprised of medical students, pharmacy students and physicians to third‐world countries including Haiti, Nicaragua and Ecuador to provide international medical relief.

Each year, WHSO hosts a Health for the Holidays dinner in order to spread awareness about global health disparities and to raise money for our six medical missions to Haiti, Nicaragua and Ecuador. We have amazing speakers to discuss their insights on global health accompanied with a lovely dinner, live music from the very talented Stephen Fox (M2) and UltraSounds, and a silent auction. Our speakers are Dr. Jamey Snell (Pediatric Anesthesiologist), Dr. Kyle Martin (Emergency Medicine) and Dr. Aaron Tabor (Emergency Medicine). More detailed bios below.

All proceeds will go towards medications and medical supplies for each country we visit!

Hope to see you there!

Dr. Jamey Snell completed his undergraduate education at Florida A&M University in Tallahassee and went on to become a Harvard Medical School graduate. He attended NYU for residency and became the Chief Resident of Anesthesiology. Dr. Snell then pursued a two-year fellowship program in pediatric anesthesia and global health at Boston Children’s Hospital. He recently accepted a position at the Children’s Hospital of Michigan as the Director of Sedation Services and also works at the School of Medicine. Dr. Snell has extensive global health experience from his internships with the World Health Organization and Ugandan Ministry of Health in Tanzania, from his one-month teaching fellowship serving as anesthesia faculty at Addis Abba University in Ethiopia, and from his role as an anesthesia teaching faculty member at the University of Rwanda. We are excited to have him speak at the Health for the Holidays event to hear his insight and learn about his experiences.

Dr. Kyle Martin received a Bachelor of Arts and a Master’s of Public Health at Michigan State University. He was then accepted into Michigan State’s College of Osteopathic Medicine program and received his DO. Currently, Dr. Martin is an Emergency Medicine Resident at Henry Ford Macomb Hospital. Throughout his career, Dr. Martin has been heavily involved with global health initiatives. He is currently the Co-Founder of Run Haiti and was also the Haiti Country Director for Humanity First USA.  He was also the Director of Community Health and Statistics for Cloud Forest Medical Clinic in Haiti. He can even speak Creole! Dr. Martin has been a huge supporter of WHSO over the years and has been on many of our trips. We are grateful that he can speak about his experiences both with WHSO and his other amazing initiatives.

Dr. Aaron Tabor received his Bachelor of Science in Biology from Elmhurst College, with a minor in communication studies, and received a Master's of Public Health from Benedictine University. He then went on to receive his medical degree from Rush Medical College in Chicago, IL. He is now an Emergency Medicine Resident at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan and also the Founder and President of Make a Change International. In 2015 he was presented with the National Award for Excellence in Public Health from the United States Public Health Services. Dr. Tabor is committed to improving the lives of those globally and participates in many international trips. His most recent trip was to the Dominican Republic where he was able to use his skills in both medicine and in construction to greatly improve the community he visited. We look forward to learning more about Make a Change International and Dr. Tabor’s global experiences.
